Russian President Vladimir Putin used a major patriotic holiday to again justify his war in Ukraine but did not declare even a limited victory or signal where the conflict was headed.

Ukraine President Volodymir Zelensky says U.N. officials are working with his country to evacuate more civilians trapped in a steel plant in the besieged city of Mariupol. Late Sunday night, international peacekeepers were able to strike a deal with Russian and Ukrainian authorities to evacuate about 100 people.

The shipment comes as Ukraine braces for a major Russian assault in the eastern Donbas region. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin calls his troops’ siege of Mariupol “a success.”
The United States will provide $500 million more in financial assistance for Ukraine to sustain critical government operations as it fends off the Russia invasion.
