In a ruling, the SC Supreme Court reversed a previous ruling and determined the state’s Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act is Constitutional.
The Act protects life by prohibiting abortions after a fetal heartbeat has been detected, with exceptions for the life or health of the mother, medical emergencies, fatal fetal anomalies, and, up to twelve weeks of pregnancy, in cases of rape or incest.
“I would love to see pro-life legislation from the moment of conception but I feel like the Fetal Heartbeat Protection Act is a good law that puts us in line with our neighboring states,” Laye said.
By a 22 to 20 vote, the Senate adjourned, ultimately killing the bill.
While some medical experts are against proposed laws being discussed that would prohibit abortions, there are also those in healthcare that support the ban.
Some were outraged at the states Fetal Heartbeat Bill, with others saying it’s not enough.
