Lawmakers from both parties joined students and advocates today to raise awareness about hunger on college campuses in South Carolina.
This time last year, the food bank served around 83,000 people during this six-week period. This year, that number has skyrocketed to around 148,000 people in that same time frame.
For many low-income families throughout the Midlands, Thanksgiving can be a reminder of the food insecurity they face on a daily basis.
Harvest Hope Food Bank held its 1st on-site volunteer event at Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.
“On Mondays the market will be at Hyatt Park, which is where we are today for the press conference, and on Tuesdays it will be at Greenview Park, and on Thursdays it will be at Edgewood Library from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. And that’s our initial target is the 29203 and 29204 zip code, but we hope to expand eventually,” says Driggers.
“Currently Instacart serves 100% of the City of Columbia, in every zip code. So no matter where you live in the city limits, you have a delivery option. Those zip codes also have shopping options so you’re not bound to one store or another. There are five to eight stores you can choose from,” says Rickenmann.
Senior Resources says its Meals on Wheels program is currently serving over 600 clients a day with the help of 250 volunteers a week, yet there is still a list of seniors seeking support and more volunteers are needed.
